Egerter, Jean Marie

Passed away peacefully at the Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga on Sunday, September 6, 2020 at the age of 93 years. Dear sister of Orval Egerter (Marion) and Dear Aunt of Craig Finnson (Gail), Dyrun Finnson (Peter), Dwight Egerter (Catherine), Laurie Egerter (David) and Jeffrey Egerter (Robyn (Deceased)). Predeceased by her parents, Grover and Flora Egerter, sister, Eileen Finnson (Einar), lifelong friend John Zumstein and nephew Ross Finnson (Phyllis).

Jean was a teacher in Allanburg and Thorold South until leaving her career in order to help her parents on the family farm – not only helping with the cooking and housekeeping, but also cutting hay, feeding and milking cattle. Jean was very active in 4-H for over 40 years! Many young girls learned to cook, sew and keep house under Jean’s instruction. Jean was also very active in Women’s Institute – holding office at the local, district and provincial levels. Jean’s mother, Flora, with the support of Jean, and other members of the Allanburg Women’s Institute were instrumental in the provincial government choosing Niagara as a site for what became Brock University.

Jean loved children. All her nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, as well as many local children all have fond memories of hanging out with “Aunt Jean”. Jean’s positive attitude and selfless and practical character impacted many lives and she will be dearly missed.

The funeral service to honour Jean's life will take place on Thursday, September 10 at 12:00 noon. Visitation will take place 1 hour prior to the service (11:00 AM - 12:00 PM). Limited refreshments will be provided after the service. Interment at Fonthill Cemetery will follow refreshments. In keeping with the current regulations, masks are required to be worn while at the funeral home. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Thorold South-Allanburg Church, Canadian Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s Society.

I have so many wonderful memories of “Aunt Jean”. The Egerter farm was a great place to visit and my sleepovers with cousin Dyrun was always a summer highlight. Aunt Jean would pack a big picnic lunch and march us onto a bus to go to the CNE. It was alway a day of fun watching the fashion shows, tasting all the wonderful free samples in the Food exhibit building, doing our own critiques of the crafts and florals and of course eating cotton candy. She was always so patient with Dyrun and I during our adolescent sillies. She rescued and help clean me up after falling in the manure, comforted me when I fell off the horse and cleared us out when we were about to be caught by Uncle Grover while jumping in the oats. Card parties at Grandma and Grandpa Stephenson’s always included her and her laugh. My Dad Ken thought the world of his cousin and always enjoyed his time with her. I know she gave so much of herself to everyone around her and we were all blessed.
Thinking of all of you and giving thanks that you had her in your lives for so many wonderful years.
Love, Cathy Jenken (Stephenson)

My mother Georgenia Kinnaird always spoke fondly of Jean. My grandmother and grandfather Russell and Anges Kinnaird also aways talked fondly of Jean and her family.
I never really got to know Jean but always knew of her as a wonderful lady.

Knew Jean from family reunions..including a few chuckles & stories among the ladies on kitchen duty. My grandson (Leo's great-grandson) now in 3rd yr. at Brock, was impressed by Flora Egerter Way & wondered if he could get a discount on tuition since he has "Egerter blood" Good try Zach ! Love to all. Diane (Egerter) Abfal

I was very sorry to hear of Jean's passing. What a wonderful woman and example Jean was to so many. My sister Kari and I were some of those girls Jean taught in 4-H and we have some great memories of those times. She taught with so much patience and good humour. Every time I pass through Allanburg I think of her. With deepest sympathy, Jodi (Hudson) Campbell.
