John Allan McGregor
It is with sadness that we announce the death of John McGregor of Welland, Ontario on November 13, 2018, at the age of 82, after a struggle with lung cancer.
John was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the youngest of 7 children and the only son. In 1951 he left Scotland for Canada to join his war-bride older sister, Jean Woods, in Saint Catharines, Ontario. He went to high school and then McMaster University, qualifying with a BA in Modern Languages, and became a school teacher. He went on to teach elementary school, and then high school French, English and German in Sudbury (Ontario), Dryden (Ontario), St. John's (Antigua), Nkongsamba (Cameroon), Blaine Lake (Saskatchewan), Niagara region, (Ontario), Macon (France), and then finished his career in the Niagara region (Ontario). After retirement he taught English as a Second Language in the Czech Republic and Spain.
He married Elizabeth Addison in 1962 and they had three sons, Andrew, Richard and Allan and were married for 42 years. After the breakup of this marriage, John became the partner of Diane Sauder of Welland, and they were together for 14 years.
John was very active in the United Church in St Catharines and Fonthill, completing his term as the Chair of the Fonthill United Church Council in 2018. He was a well-known soccer referee, enjoyed badminton and he and Diane together enjoyed dancing, Meals on Wheels volunteering, and spending time with family. He was the founder and president of the Fifth Wheel dancing club.
He is loved and will be missed by his partner Diane Sauder and her daughter Terri Proulx and family.
He will be sadly missed by his sons Andrew (Debbie), Richard (Katharine Loevy), Allan (Nancy Manning) and his grandchildren Alex McGregor (Amanda), Nicholas McGregor (Jessica), Aimé Loevy McGregor, Elizabeth McGregor and John Manning, his niece Trish Woods (George VanHoose), and nephew Duncan Beaton (Chris McColman), his former wife Elizabeth McGregor, and many nieces and nephews in Scotland.
Many thanks to Lookout Ridge Retirement Home for their care in John's final months.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Fonthill United Church, Silver Spire United Church (St Catharines Ontario), or the Canadian Cancer Society in John's name would be appreciated.
John's funeral service will be held at the Fonthill United Church, 42 Church Hill, Fonthill, Ontario, on Monday November 19th, at 11.00am. The family will greet friends starting at 10.00am.
