Obituary

Bak, Stephen Joseph August 17, 1930 - February 19, 2021

It is in sadness, but with extreme gratitude for his life, that the family announces the peaceful passing of Stephen Joseph Bak at the Welland Hospital at the age of 90. A treasured husband for over 58 years to Agnes (nee Gadsby). Cherished father to David (Marcie), Stephanie (Robin) and Adrian. A gentle and kind grandpa to Erica, Nadia, Katrina, Ava, Helene, Stefan, Connor and Amelie. Steve will be sadly missed by his sister Rose and his brother Andy. Predeceased by his brothers John, Paul, Michael and sister Mary.

Born in Czechoslovakia, but proudly Canadian, he was a great peacemaker. Steve was a devoted son to his parents Mary and Michael, a guiding light to his brothers and sisters, a devoted husband, a proud and gracious grandpa and uncle to many, as well as a passionate participant in the local bridge club. Steve's most enduring and consistent character traits were his humility and his faith in our Lord.

As a cancer survivor, his life of perseverance and gentle vigilance is surely most aptly epitomized in the recent Lenten recommendations of Pope Francis; "Let us renew our faith, draw from the living water of hope, and receive with open hearts the love of God, who makes us brothers and sisters in Christ". As we mourn the loss of Steve, please keep this prayer in mind.

Visitation is taking place on Thursday, February 25th, in half hour sessions beginning at 1:00- 1:30, 2:00 - 2:30, 3:00 - 3:30, 4:00 - 4:30 and 5:00- 5:30pm. Evening visitation will be 6:00 - 6:30 pm, and 7:00 - 7:30 pm.
Please call the funeral home to book your appointment time. Face masks must be worn and social distancing is required.

A private Funeral Mass will take place at St. Joseph's Parish in Grimsby on Friday, February 26th at 12:30pm. The live stream can be found here.

Dear Agnes and family, we are so sad to read that Steve has passed. As one of his bridge partners of many years I am so grateful for his patience and everything he taught me about bridge. He was a kind gentleman. Deepest sympathies from John and Sylvia Christie.

Dear Mrs. Bak, Dave, Stephanie, Adrian & families:
Janet & I are so sorry to hear of your loss. I wish we could see you in person to give you all big hugs. Dave, the last time I spoke to your Dad was at St. Alexander Church just a few months ago, and I was asking him how your Mom was doing. He looked and was his usual self, a gentleman through and through. I have enjoyed our short but warm conversations with your parents through the years, beginning when we were kids in St. Catharines and attending St. Julia's, and during these latter years here in Fonthill at St. Alexander. Your Dad knew and was a friend to the Lord his whole life. I have every confidence that our Lord has called him home. I hope this provides you all with some consolation during this difficult time. Please know that your family and your Dad are in our thoughts and prayers.
